Edinburgh Leisure has announced an opening date for the long-awaited Meadowbank Sports Centre.
The centre closed in 2017 for a multi-million pound redevelopment of facilities.
A series of delays has postponed its planned opening, but Edinburgh Leisure has now confirmed the opening date for the centre will be July 19th.
The Meadowbank Sorts Centre has been a feature of the capital for almost 50 years and hosted two Commonwealth Games along the way in 1970 and 1986, the first venue to host the Games twice, as well as hosting many different types of other sporting and large-scale music events, the last one being Elton John in 2016.
It was the home of Meadowbank Thistle FC from 1974-1995.
The new Meadowbank will offer a wealth of new facilities to Edinburgh, including a martial arts studio, boxing gym, an outdoor athletics track with nearly 500-seat stand, 3G pitches with another nearly 500-seat stand, indoor gym, fitness studio, squash courts, cycle studio and two multi-sport games halls for local sports clubs.
As well as sports facilities, the new centre will also offer a number of other support services including a café, meeting rooms and offices.
Edinburgh Leisure quoted on their website:
“Meadowbank has always been at the heart of the local community and its commitment to the health and well-being of the city has never changed.
We look forward to reopening this iconic sporting venue and the finishing line of this multi-million-pound redevelopment is almost in sight.”
